Meet the Maker: Petra Gothardová, Prague
I’m really pleased to introduce the work of Prague-based ceramicist Petra Gothardová, whose pieces we’ll be stocking online. Her mugs in particular stood out to me straight away — simple, tactile, and quietly distinctive.
Petra has been working with clay for over 30 years. She first developed an interest in tea ceramics — teapots, jugs and bowls — and was influenced early on by Chinese and Japanese traditions. That influence still shows in the clean forms and considered proportions of her work.
Over time, her process has shifted from working primarily on the wheel to a more hands-on approach. Many of her pieces are now shaped from clay sheets, allowing for a more relaxed, organic finish. You’ll often notice small variations and subtle textures that make each item feel individual without being overly rustic.
One of the defining features of Petra’s ceramics is her use of wooden handles. Rather than traditional ceramic ones, she incorporates pieces of wood — often vine or liana — sourced from different parts of the world. It’s a simple idea, but it gives each mug a strong sense of character and makes every piece slightly different.
Her colour palette is inspired by natural tones — soft neutrals, gentle greens, and earthy glazes that sit easily in a range of interiors. They’re designed to be used and enjoyed every day, while still feeling considered and special.
Each piece is handmade, so no two are exactly alike, but they all share the same thoughtful approach to materials and form. Petra’s work strikes that balance between functional and unique — the kind of object that fits seamlessly into daily life but still feels like something you’ve chosen with care.
We’re delighted to be bringing her ceramics to Zarifi Interiors and sharing her work more widely.
