The Story Behind Our Handmade Ceramics: Artisan Pottery from Wrocław

At Zarifi Interiors, we believe the pieces you bring into your home should carry more than beauty — they should carry a story.

Our latest ceramic collection has been sourced directly from a talented independent maker in Wrocław, Poland, whose slow, considered process transforms simple clay into sculptural plates and bowls designed to be treasured for years to come.

If you’ve ever wondered what truly makes handmade ceramics so special, here’s a glimpse into the journey each piece takes before it arrives at your table.

Step 1: Shaping — Where Each Piece Begins

Every plate and bowl starts as compressed clay, carefully shaped either on the potter’s wheel or entirely by hand.

While the wheel creates graceful curves, it’s often the maker’s own fingers that give each piece its distinctive character — softly sculpted edges, organic silhouettes and subtle variations that no machine could replicate.

At this stage, the form is refined: surfaces are smoothed with a damp sponge, details are adjusted, and any sculptural elements are added. Depending on the size and complexity, shaping alone can take several days.

This is why no two pieces in the collection are ever identical — and why each one feels so personal.

Step 2: Drying — The Quiet Transformation

Drying may sound simple, but it’s one of the most crucial stages.

As water evaporates, the clay shrinks. Temperature, humidity, thickness and shape must all be perfectly balanced to prevent cracks. Too fast, and the piece can split. Too slow, and it risks weakness.

This is where experience matters — understanding how the clay behaves and allowing time to do its work.

Step 3: Polishing — Perfecting the Details

Before firing, each vessel is carefully inspected from every angle.

Any tiny imperfections or particles are gently removed by hand with fine sandpaper, ensuring the surface is smooth and ready for the kiln. It’s a meticulous process, but one that makes all the difference in the final finish.

Step 4: The First Firing — Strength Is Born

The pieces are stacked carefully inside the kiln for what potters call the “biscuit firing.”

For around six hours, the temperature climbs to 900°C. Then comes the waiting — the kiln must cool slowly over several days.

After this stage, the ceramics become dramatically more durable. What was once fragile clay is now hardened, porous pottery — ready to receive its glaze.

Step 5: Glazing — Colour, Depth & Character

Once cooled, each piece is washed to remove dust so the glaze can bond properly.

Glaze begins as a fine powder made from various minerals and natural elements. When mixed with water, it becomes a liquid that can be brushed or poured over the surface. The chemistry within the glaze determines its final colour and sheen.

The softly pooled greens and natural textures you see in our collection — like the sea-toned interior and organic, sculptural rim of the bowl pictured — are the result of this careful glazing process.

No two firings react in exactly the same way, which is what gives handmade ceramics their beautiful depth and variation.

Step 6: The Second Firing — Patience Rewarded

The final firing reaches approximately 1300°C.

Again, patience is everything. Opening the kiln too early can cause thermal shock and cracking. So the pieces are left to cool gradually back to room temperature.

Only then is the final result revealed — often for the first time.

It’s a moment of anticipation every ceramicist knows well.

Why Handmade Matters in Your Home

In a world of fast production and identical design, handmade ceramics offer something different:

  • Subtle irregularities that feel human
  • Textures that catch the light beautifully
  • Forms that elevate everyday rituals — morning coffee, weekend brunch, shared dinners

Our Wrocław collection has been curated for homes that value warmth, character and thoughtful design. These plates and bowls are designed to be used — layered on open shelving, styled on coffee tables, or placed at the centre of your dining table.

They’re not just functional pieces. They’re conversation starters.
